This textbook aims to introduce the reader to the basic principles and methods of virtual outcrop models and their applications within structural geology. We first provide the reader with the basic concepts of virtual outcrop models and an overview of methods commonly employed for digitally scanning outcrop surfaces: lidar and Structure from Motion - Multi-VIew Stereo (SfM-MVS) photogrammetry. We then focus upon SfM-MVS photogrammetry, illustrating its fundamental concepts. Finally, we illustrate key applications of virtual outcrop models in the field of structural geology. In addition, the book features six training exercises that serve to illustrate the fundamental steps and issues related to the creation and interpretation of models.

STEFANO TAVANI is Professor in structural geology at the Department of Earth Sciences, Environment, and Resources at Federico II University of Naples and Associate Professor at the National Research Council of Italy, IGAG. He teaches undergraduate and graduate courses on virtual outcrop models, field mapping, and structural geology. His research expertise is in virtual outcrops, structural geology, tectonics, and geodynamics.

AMERIGO CORRADETTI is an Assistant Professor in structural geology at the Department of Mathematics, Informatics and Geosciences of the University of Trieste. His research includes the study of compressional tectonic settings of the Mediterranean and the Middle East region, faults and fractures evolution, distribution and analysis, and the characterization of reservoir analogues. Amerigo's studies have often taken advantage of digital photogrammetry and virtual outcrop modeling.

MARCO MERCURI is a post-doctoral researcher in structural geology at the Department of Earth Sciences of the Sapienza University of Rome. His research focuses on the study of brittle deformation structures in carbonate reservoir analogues, with particular focus on fault structure and mechanics. Marco's studies are performed by integrating classical fieldwork and the interrogation of virtual outcrop models.

THOMAS SEERS is an Associate Professor within the Petroleum Engineering Program at Texas A&M University at Qatar (TAMUQ). Dr. Seers teaches graduate and undergraduate courses in geology, petroleum engineering and interdisciplinary engineering. His research focuses upon acquisition, processing and analysis of close-range 3D remote sensing data for geologic applications, including structural geology and reservoir characterization.
