In the general publics perception, the geological oeuvre of Charles Darwin is overshaded by his work on organic evolution that places him, in the view of Steven Jay Gould, in one row between Copernicus and Sigmund Freud, men who redefined the place of mankind in the universe. Traditionally, it is Charles Lyell who together with James Hutton is regarded as the founder of „Modern Geology“; however, Darwin by adding linear time, time’s arrow to the concept of cyclic time of Hutton and Lyell, was at eye level with his master Lyell. With the reconstruction of the history of coral islands from fringing to barrier reefs and thence to atolls he established the first palinspastic–chronologic reconstruction of geological processes based on „causes now in operation“: Departing from deductive mental experiments, and combining in a iterative process pertinent observations with continuously modified working hypotheses, he was able to build a unifying theory, that now can easily be extended to guyots, the „sunken islands of the mid-Pacific mountains“ and that is, by and large, still valid. His observations and thoughtful interpretations on the importance of Saharian dust to sediment transport and marine deposition, or on raised beaches in South America, e.g., are absolutely modern. Indeed, Darwin might have been as important for geology as for biology; in his early years he saw himself as a geologist rather than as a biologist.

The book of Guido Chiesura draws attention to this. It shows the importance of his geological experiences during the Voyage of the Beagle for the evolution of his thoughts, his rediscovery of geological time that became a prerequisite for the formulation of his „Origin of Species“. The book illustrates in a concise way the state of geology in the early 19th century when geology was a fashionable and popular science as astronomy and cosmology are today. The observations Darwin made during the Voyage of the Beagle are illustrated by excerpts of his most important observations; his published three major books are carefully analyzed. The book documents also his intellectual honesty he proved when he accepted the critics of his failed interpretation of Glen Roy. Chiesura’s book is a forceful exercise about the ways of science. It shows that science is performed in the social and political environment of ist time, and it illustrates in a very well documented way the evolution of reasoning and thought of an exceptional scientist. It is hoped that with this book the lament of Darwin to be forced „to write books on geology that nobody will ever read“ will be contradicted.

La SGI è lieta di patrocinare questa seconda edizione di «Darwin geologo» di Guido Chiesura. Charles Darwin è uno dei padri delle scienze naturali che ha saputo valorizzare, tra le altre scoperte, l’importanza della geologia nella comprensione dei meccanismi di evoluzione della vita. La geologia è la madre delle scienze della Natura comprendendole tutte: dalla chimica alla fisica e alla biologia, sotto il cappello di ben precise regole matematiche. Le rocce sono un archivio storico del pianeta e gli strati rappresentano le pagine di un libro in cui leggere il diario della Terra e della vita su di essa. Nel suo libro, Guido Chiesura ci accompagna nel viaggio di Darwin nei mari e nei continenti del Sudamerica e nelle isole vulcaniche, ricostruendo alcuni tratti essenziali che hanno portato il giovane geologo inglese a un modo nuovo di spiegare alcuni elementi dell’evoluzione geologica terrestre, consentendogli poi di ricostruire i fondamenti del codice di sviluppo della vita.

Con questa iniziativa la SGI intende non solo contribuire alla valorizzazione di Darwin come geologo, ma anche affermare l’importanza storica della nostra disciplina. Grazie alla crescente sensibilità di alcuni Soci, la SGI ha per questo istituito nel 2012 la Sezione di Storia delle Geoscienze per ricostruire il cammino della geologia in Italia attraverso il ricordo delle figure scientifiche degli uomini e delle donne che in tali campi hanno operato: dai pionieri delle scienze naturali e i padri fondatori delle moderne discipline geologiche, a coloro che hanno condotto le geoscienze italiane verso il XXI secolo.

È affascinante seguire il lungo percorso compiuto da tanti nostri colleghi nel ‘tempo profondo’ della Terra; capire come «mentre il nostro pianeta ha continuato a ruotare secondo l’immutabile legge della gravità, da un così semplice inizio innumerevoli forme, bellissime e meravigliose, si sono evolute e continuano ad evolversi». Grazie a Guido Chiesura, la lettura di questo libro è un’esperienza che ci fa sentire orgogliosi sia come geologi, che come cittadini del mondo.
